Looks like Disney is moving forward with a sequel to 2014’s, Maleficent, the blockbuster fairytale starring Angelina Jolie as the title character. Linda Woolverton, the screenwriter behind many of Disney’s biggest hits (“Maleficent,” Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland,” “Beauty and the Beast”), has signed on to pen the sequel.
No word on the return of Jolie yet, but the studio is keeping the actress in the loop. To do so, they would have to make a new deal with her to reprise her role. Joe Roth will be back as the film’s producer, the return of director Robert Stromberg is still up in the air.
Woolverton’s reimagining of Disney’s animated film “Sleeping Beauty” told from the point of view of the villain Maleficent, is an example of the phrase, “there’s always two sides to a story”. The film was a surprise hit for the studio, ending its theatrical run with a worldwide gross of $758 million in ticket sales.
Repped by WME, Woolverton is currently at work on the “Alice” sequel “Through the Looking-Glass.”
