Iconic girl group TLC used crowdfunding via Kickstarter to fund their last album, and we’re happy to see that the duo has reached their goal! After a long hiatus, the remaining members, T-Boz and Chilli, were determined to give it one last shot, to create an album that would, “stay true to the TLC sound, always confronting the real issues and life experiences that we all must face every single day, everywhere. We write music that people relate to… timeless music. No matter the trends, we feel like our music is always relevant.”
The duo explains,
“While major labels offer artists multimillion dollar recording and marketing budgets, they don’t often give artists complete control of their own music. It is ESSENTIAL that we create our final album completely on our own terms, without any restrictions, with YOU.”
Initially seeking to raise $150,000 USD to fund the project, the group managed to raise $430,255 USD with the help of 4,201 backers. Almost three times their original goal. Fans weren’t the only backers for the project, Katy Perry and New Kids on the Block were among the high profile supporters. In the final hours of their campaign on Wednesday night, they released a statement saying,
“Thank you to everyone who has donated to our final album!! The amount doesn’t matter but the fact that you donated means the world to us.”
It was later announced that Virgin’s chief creative officer Ron Fair had signed on as executive producer for the project. With his backing, high profile collaborations won’t be too far behind. Fair says,
“The return of TLC is surrounded by incredible positivity. The entire creative community of artists, producers and songwriters is invited to the celebration.”
Can’t wait to hear what they can come up with. In the meantime, TLC will appear alongside Nelly and New Kids on the Block for, “The Main Event” a two month long tour this spring, kicking off at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas.
