Ready for the return of Game of Thrones? We all are. In preparation for the shows upcoming fourth season ’All Men Must Die,‘ a mixtape inspired by the show, will be released by HBO. So if you’re not hip to the show, you get a chance to catch up and listen to good music at the same time.
The Catch the Throne mixtape is a 10-song collection that recaps seasons one, two and three of the show and includes a slew of artists from hip hop, reggae, raggaeton and alternative. Big Boi rapping about the mother of dragons, sounds interesting. Lucinda Martinez, HBO’s senior VP of cultural marketing, says the network reached out to fans of the show to help create a musical tune-in incentive for millennials. Martinez says,
We wanted to drop it a month in advance because people tend to binge-watch – especially now that winter is here, and the idea of having a bunch of artists create songs in different style with different interpretations of what ‘Game of Thrones’ is to them as artists could be an interesting way to get people engaged to watch it.
The mixtape was produced by Launch Point Records and will be available for download through Soundcloud starting today. The mixtape’s release will tie-in with “Game of Thrones: The Exhibition” being held at the upcoming SXSW festival where it will remain until March 11. Check out the list of featured artists and confirmed tracks below. Also take a listen to the 10th track, Wale’s “The King Slayer”. It’s actually pretty good, even if you’re not a Wale fan, there’s no denying the catchiness of the track. And of course, Kilo Kish’s “Magical Reality is… perfect. The mixtape is definitely a melting pot. It’s super hard to pick a favorite of the bunch, Snow Tha Product’s, “Fire” touches on gender roles and hardships faced by Daenerys, Dominik Omega’s, “Arya’s Prayer” has an amazing instrumental, and Common seems to be dropping references left and right to the episode featuring the infamous Red Wedding.
