The Women and Hollywood blog at Indiewire has just posted an infographic regarding numbers of women in filmmaking at the Sundance Film Fesitval. Behind the scenes mostly. The 2014 festival lineup featuring women directors at Sundance was pretty low.
I can name at least 5 female film directors right now off the top of my head, who are putting out amazing work. So what’s the problem? The work is good, but their aren’t enough submissions, or maybe it’s the other way around. We can no longer cry foul about representation of women in the film industry if we can’t or won’t do our parts. The key to the solution is putting more women behind the scenes. Female producers, writers, directors, cinematographers (hey). Bottom line, we need more women in the film industry, and Sundance is definitely a good platform to get there. Just think of all the careers that were launched just from a simple screening at the festival. Think of how many could be launched.
Thankfully, the festival continues to do their part to ensure the advancement of women directors in the film industry.
Below is an infographic that shows how well the careers of festival participants fare by gender.
